Özet (EN)
This research presents a comprehensive investigation into the evolutionary process of clarinet performance techniques in modern music, with a particular focus on Fantasie, a composition by Jörg Widmann. The fundamental premise of this study originates from the limited availability of literature and analytical research on modern music, especially in relation to the clarinet. One of the key reasons for the underdevelopment of modern music literature and scholarly works is the relatively limited acceptance and dissemination of modern and contemporary compositions among the general public. The abstract and, at times, unconventional nature of such music often leads to reduced interest and limited appreciation, as contemporary works are characterized by new ideas, techniques, literacy forms, and interpretative approaches in their presentation. In addition to the analysis of modern music, this study also offers detailed explanations of instrumental performance techniques. Since Fantasie is a contemporary work, the clarinet techniques employed in this composition differ significantly from those found in Baroque, Classical, and Romantic period works. These distinctions contribute to making contemporary compositions not only different but also unique and compelling in various aspects. As indicated in the title of this research, the primary focus of the study is on new concepts in clarinet performance techniques as exemplified in Fantasie. The clarinet techniques employed in this work represent a significant evolutionary step in the history of clarinet performance, where many conventional rules from earlier musical eras are no longer applied, and ideas that once seemed strange or unimaginable have been normalized. One example of these innovative techniques is the use of microtonality, through which the clarinet produces more than one pitch simultaneously, despite the instrument traditionally being limited to playing single melodic lines. Another example is the glissando, which is performed with new variations in this composition. In addition to performance techniques, ornamentation plays an important role in Fantasie. Various forms of ornamentation have been developed and employed, giving rise to new musical characters within the work. Beyond performance techniques, the compositional structure of Fantasie is another notable aspect that distinguishes it from previous clarinet works. Unlike the traditional practice of pairing the clarinet with accompaniment—such as piano, orchestra, or chamber ensembles like trios and quartets—Fantasie is written exclusively for solo clarinet without any accompaniment. This unique instrumentation directs complete attention to the clarinet itself, emphasizing and showcasing the technical possibilities and nuances of the instrument in great detail. To address the research questions, data collection was conducted using a descriptive analytical method with a qualitative approach. Data were also obtained through a literature review of scores, books, audio and video materials sourced from online media, as well as direct interviews with the composer of Fantasie, Jörg Widmann, conducted via email. This greatly facilitated the research process. In addition to the direct exchange with the composer, several other key informants contributed to this study. Among them was Professor Ilyaz Mirzaev, a composition professor at MGU, who provided insights into the compositional aspects of the work, and Professor Giuseppe Corpina from Italy, a professional clarinetist, who offered valuable perspectives on both general clarinet performance techniques and modern performance practices, commonly referred to as extended techniques. Beyond discussions of compositional structure and performance techniques, another noteworthy aspect of this study is its potential to offer solutions to recurring challenges in the field. Often, composers lack sufficient understanding of the fundamental performance techniques of the instruments they write for, leading to notational errors and rendering certain compositions unplayable or difficult to interpret. However, Jörg Widmann, as both a composer and a professional clarinetist, possesses a comprehensive mastery of both basic and advanced clarinet techniques. This expertise ensures that Fantasie is not only technically coherent but also highly performable, minimizing the potential for interpretative ambiguity. In addition to the clarinet performance techniques featured in Fantasie, this study also focuses on two other significant aspects: the notation (or score writing) of Fantasie and the interpretation of the work by musicians. Ideally, during the Classical era, musical compositions were handwritten; however, as time progressed, new methods and systems, such as computer-based notation software, were developed to facilitate the writing process. This evolution has influenced the symbols and notational practices used in compositions. In Fantasie, the symbols employed are highly varied and can be considered innovative. Naturally, detailed and precise score writing is of great importance, as it allows the composer to convey the main concepts and core ideas of the composition clearly. In this work, every element is meticulously notated, minimizing ambiguity and reducing the potential for misunderstandings, as all intended aspects are explicitly expressed in the score. This is closely related to the second aspect discussed here, which concerns interpretation. A comparative analysis of Fantasie performances across seven different countries revealed that interpretations of the piece exhibit minimal variation. Such consistency would not be possible if either the composer or the performers lacked a thorough understanding of fundamental music theory and instrumental performance techniques. In Fantasie, the focus is predominantly on the clarinet, and the composer's deep knowledge of the instrument ensures both clarity in notation and consistency in interpretation among performers.
