Analysis of TV series Dexter according to Jung's archetypes

This thesis examines the concept of the shadow archetype, a key element in Carl Gustav Jung's analytical psychology, through the television series Dexter. The study is based on Jung's theories of the collective unconscious and archetypes, and explores how the shadow—which represents the repressed aspects of the individual—is reflected within narrative structures. According to Jung, the shadow encompasses the traits that the individual pushes into the unconscious because they are deemed unacceptable by society. Confronting these aspects is essential for self-awareness and achieving inner wholeness. In this context, television series are not merely entertainment tools; they also serve as narrative spaces that allow viewers to develop awareness of their inner worlds. The character of Dexter Morgan is portrayed as a forensic expert by day and a vigilante serial killer by night. This dual identity corresponds to Jung's concepts of the "persona" and the "shadow," and the character's development is examined season by season through this internal conflict. The study employs a qualitative research approach using content analysis. The character's transformation is evaluated within the framework of Jung's individuation process. This thesis demonstrates how Jungian archetype theory can be applied to media narratives, and illustrates how both individual and collective shadows become visible through the anti-hero figure.
