Job satisfaction and burnout syndrome in flight attendants

Flight attendants are the most important customer representatives of airline companies with their position affecting passenger satisfaction, profitability and sustainability to the extent their job performance. The aim of this research is to specify relations between job satisfaction and burnout, and level of them for the flight attendants, to evaluate the results considering demographic factors and to offer suggestions to airline company managers and flight attendants. A 48-question survey that contained Minnesota Job Satisfaction scale and Maslach Burnout scale with specific demographic variables was conducted on 237 flight attendants working in an airline company on condition that company remains anonymous. Reliability, distribution and frequency analyses are carried out by using the SPSS 20 program; and also correlation analysis is made so as to determine relations between job satisfaction and burnout with their sub dimensions. According to the research results, "total burnout and job satisfaction" in cabin crews are at "middle level"; as sub dimensions of the burnout, "emotional burnout" and "decrease in personal success" are at middle level, "desensitization" is at low level; as sub dimensions of the job satisfaction, organizational job satisfaction is at middle level and individual job satisfaction is high level. An inverse and significant correlation is determined between total job satisfaction and total burnout; similarly, significant relations are found between their sub dimensions. No any significant correlation is found between demographic factors and them. Key Words: Flight attendants, job satisfaction, burnout.
