Evaluation of clinical syptoms, etiological reasons and monitoring results of cases with constipation complaint

Constipation is an often seen defecation problem in childhood cohorts. A high rate of constipation cases makes up the general pediatry polyclinics %3-5 and pediatric gastroenterology clinics %25 (1-6)The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical syptoms of cases with constipation complaint, etologic reasons, factors increasing the complaint, factors increasing the liability for constipation, response on treatments and monitoring results.This study started with 192 cases having constipation complaint being brought to Fırat University Medical Faculty Children' s Health and Disease Department of Child Gastroenterological Polyclinics between January 2006- August 2010.The age, gender, gestational age, the first meconium outflow time, constipation reason, growth-development, daily defecation number, defecation consistence, wether they took additioanl nutriment or not, family history, major complaint, factors increasing the complaint, treatments applied, monitoring periods, monitoring results, complaint periods before application have been recorded.As a result; % 56,8 of the cases with constipation complaint were boys, % 43,2 were girls. %4,7 of the cases had organic, %95,3 functional constipation and constipation complaint was most found in cases between 37-72 month. The most common complaint of this cases was pain in the stomach and the anal area. %64.6 of the cases had a family history. Average complaint period was 17.6 month.When the factors increasing the complaints were evaluated it was found that diet and physical activity rarity were the most important factors fors this cases.The repetition rate for patients with constipation problems in young age was found high, also it was found that the complaint repetition rate decreased with age. In the 13-24 age cohort the complaint repetition was found high end the best treatment response was seen in the 37-72 month age cohort.Key Words: Children, Constipation, Prognosis, Medical Treatment
