Effects of cadmium on sera parameters and tissue accumulation in Cyprinus carpio (L. 1758)

Prof. Dr. Özcan AY Accumulation of cadmium in gill, liver, kidney, spleen, muscle and brain tissues and changes in levels of sera aminotransferase, total protein, albumin and glucose were determined after exposing C. carpio to 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 ppm Cd over 1, 3, 15 and 30 days. Tissue metal levels and sera parameters were determined using ICP-AES and auto analyzer spectrophotometric methods respectively. Tissue accumulation of cadmium was significantly higher in the tissues studied when compared with the controls. The following relationship was found between the tissues in accumulating cadmium; Kidney > Gills> Liver > Spleen > Muscle > Brain Short term exposure to cadmium affected the sera aminotransferase, total protein, albumin and glucose levels and this effect, however, disappeared on prolonged exposure periods.
