Epidemiological and molecular study of genotypes 18, 16, 31 and 35 of the human papilloma virus associated with breast and cervical cancer in women

With 2.08 million new cases worldwide each year, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. It is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women worldwide, and breast cancer is responsible for 15% of deaths. This study included 112 women with cancer, 110 with breast cancer and only 2 with cervical cancer. Samples were collected in the histopathological laboratory unit of al-Imam Al-Hussein Teaching Hospital between January 2022 and October 2022. In our study, it was aimed to define HPV-16, HPV-18, HPV-33 and HPV-35 viral genotypes. The results obtained showed that 45 (40.18%) women with cancer had HPV virus. No virus was detected in 67 (59.82%) women with cancer. In addition, different HPV genotypes were found in women with breast cancer, while HPV was not found in women with cervical cancer. When we look at our results by age groups, in our study, 20.54% of women in the 41-50 age group and 8.93% of the women in the 31-40 age group were positive samples, while the lowest isolated virus was found in women in the 20-30 age group with a rate of 3.57%. HPV infection was detected in 28.57% of women with a family history. The most common virus isolated from viral genotype-positive samples was HPV-33 with 36.17%. This was followed by HPV-35 with 31.91%, HPV-16 with 29.79% and HPV-18 with 2.13%, respectively. In addition, in our study, it was determined that two cases were infected with two viral genotypes.
