Experiences, opinions and suggestions about the privacy of the women while giving birth

This study has been conducted with the purpose of identifying women's experiences, opinions and suggestions regarding the privacy during delivery. The study was conducted descriptively between December 2018 and December 2019 in the Obstetrics Service of Aydın Maternity and Child Hospital. A total of 300 women were included in the study by convenience sampling method (n=300). The data of the study were collected through The Introductory Information Form and the Experience, Opinion and Suggestions Form. Descriptive statistics (number, percentage and mean) were used in the analysis of the data. The average age of women participating in the study was 27,10±5,9 years. It was found out that 56.7% of the women in the study were primary or secondary school graduates and 82,7% were housewives and 20,7% didn't have health insurance. It was determined that 58% of women experienced pregnancy 2-3 times and 45,3% had vaginal delivery. It was found out that 76,7% of them experienced delivery with the presence of either a family member or a close friend in the delivery room and 53,3% had a shouting or involuntary voice during the delivery. It was established that, in the course of delivery process, 91,6% of women had opinions on the keeping of their privacy, all of the women on the physical environment in the delivery room, 97,3% on the sharing of examination results loudly and 94,7% on the privacy regarding some physical circumstances during the delivery process. It was found that 47,3% of women had suggestions concerning the physical conditions in the delivery room and 25% about the people present in the delivery room during the delivery process. In the study, it has been concluded that women generally did not experince a loss of privacy during delivery, however, they reported many pinions and suggestions regarding privacy. Midwives who are paying attention to patient privacy, taking empathic approach, acting ethically in accepting that the right to privacy is a human right could contribute to the improvement of women's health and women's positive birth experience.
