Abstract (EN)

viINVESTIGATION OF THE CERAMICS FROM MEDIEVAL AGES THATARE OBTAINED DURING THE EXCAVATIONS OF KAHRAMANMARAŞ-MİNNETPINARI, ERZİNCAN-AKMEZAR, ÇİLHOROZ, ERZURUM-GÜLLÜDERE, TASMASOR, ARDAGAH-SAZPEGLER BY XRF TECHNIQUE(M. Sc. Thesis)Tuğba DORUGAZİ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJanuary 2007ABSTRACTIn this study, 32 units of glazed and non-glazed ceramic pieces which are dated tomedieval ages, are examined by XRF (X-ray fluorescence) technique. Theceramics are obtained from the excavation, sites in KahramanMaraş-Minnetpinari, Erzincan-Akmezar, Çilhoroz, Erzurum-Güllüdere, Tasmasor,Ardahan-Sazpegler that are within the content of BTC-HPBH project by GU-ARCED. At each excavation site, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysisare performed to their destructive and non-destructive samples respectively. Theglazes of the destructive samples are scraped and they are analyzed as forqualitative aspects at their glazes. In order to cluster of the quantitative data thatare obtained SPSS statistical program is applied, and accordingly Factor Analysisis implemented. Also special statistical techniques titled HCA (HierarchicalCluster Analysis) are applied on them. Such techniques are applied to theexcavations sites both individually and jointly to all of such sites. As a result it isobserved that the samples coded as MP-3, GD-1 and AKM-1 are distinguishedfrom the group. In the ceramics that are obtained from two excavation sites titledCilhoroz and Minnetpinari, their mineralogical analysis are done by XRD (X-RayDiffraction) technique. The composition of minerals are obtained as quartz, albite, and only in the sample coded CH-5, it is observed as keatite. Illite andviikaolinite clays are observed during the clay analysis. Pb is found as the majorelement in the glazes and it is followed by Cu and Fe elements. The results thatare obtained by XRF technique are evaluated by statistical analysis andsupported by XRD and archeological comments. As our technique is non-destructive in addition to its qualifications of being rapid, precise, economic andreliable, this indicates that it is very suitable for the characterise of archeologicalmaterials.Science Code : 202.2.005Key Words :X-Ray fluorescence analysis, Ceramic, Glaze,Archeometer, EDXRFS, Kahramanmaraş-Minnetpinari,Erzincan-Akmezar, Çilhoroz, Erzurum-Güllüdere,Tasmasor, Ardahan-SazpeglerPage Number : 85Adviser : Prof. Dr. Pervin ARIKAN
