Abstract (EN)

The necessity of patient education and post-discharge follow-up is emphasized for the successful management of heart failure. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the education given by the teach back method applied to individuals diagnosed with heart failure on symptom control, treatment compliance and self-care behaviors. This research was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study in a "pretest-posttest" design. The sample of the study consisted of 62 individuals who received inpatient treatment with a diagnosis of heart failure in the Cardiology service of Amasya University Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin Training and Research Hospital. Patients in the training group were given approximately 45-60 minutes of training using the teach back method and were given a written training booklet at the end of the training. The training was repeated on the day the patient was discharged. Telephone follow-up interviews were conducted at the first week, 1st month, and 3rd month after discharge. Standard care was followed for patients in the control group. The pretest data of the study were collected within the first 24 hours of admission, and the posttest data were collected 3 months after discharge. Research data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Heart Failure Symptom Status Scale (HFPSS), Morisky Treatment Compliance Scale-8 (MTCS), European Heart Failure Self-Care Behaviors Scale-12 (AKHSS). The average age of the patients is 66,93±9,21; 35.5% are women, 61.3% have additional chronic diseases, and the average diagnosis time of the patients is 3,6 years. The MTCS scores of the patients in the teach back group were found to be higher than those in the control group after education (p<0,05). It was determined that the HFPSS pre-post test mean scores did not show a statistically significant difference between the groups over time (p>0,05). It was determined that the group-time interaction of AKHSS total score average was statistically significant (p<0,05). In this study, it was determined that the teach back method improved self-care behaviors and increased treatment compliance. It is recommended that the "Teach Back" training technique be disseminated in nursing care education and that studies examining the effectiveness of this method be increasedi.
