Abstract (EN)

Realia, so-called culture-specific items, are among the most well-known translation problems in literary translation. Translating realia requires a high level of translational competence from the translator. The translation techniques used by the translator to solve the aforementioned translation problem play a major role. The translation strategy of the translator is therefore important for the quality of the translation. The aim of this research is to analyze the translations of realia by the famous translator Kâmuran Şipal, based on the Turkish translations of Hermann Hesse's novel Narziß und Goldmund (Narziss ve Goldmund), and to determine Şipal's translation strategy by using them. In the theoretical part of the research, the general basics of literary translation and the translational problems of translating realia are presented. In the practical part, example analyzes of selected realia translations from the aforementioned novel follow, which are evaluated according to Christiane Nord's evaluation criteria "functionality" and "loyalty". The analysis shows that Şipal has a high translation competence and that his realia translations meet Nord's criteria of "functionality" and "loyalty". Şipal's translational handling of the problem of translating realia shows that Şipal uses a target reader-oriented translation strategy that at the same time preserves the source text and meets the general expectations from literary translation.
