Sundial practice as a public space statue

ABSTRACTStatues produced for public space, as in other elements of public share, has recently had more function than being mere imagery. Hence, they could play an efficient role in creation of much more livable public areas, provided that they are to be produced in order to appeal in many aspects the ones who shall use the areas in question. In addition to the fact that a statue of public space could subsist in conjunction with the surroundings where it is situated, it shall physically and mentally have unity via the mission it has undertaken. Statues of public space are notably different from indoor sculptures in terms of both as surroundings and as messages involved and their active role in social relationships.Identity of a city is determined by the past traces of that city. In our day, each city all around the world definitely has an imagery which brings its past to the present. Sundials, as one of the images shuttling between past and present, serve an image having a visual presentation besides its own functionality. Sundials, which has nowadays lost the quality of being functional, are being re-designed in an artistic manner. They could, in addition to composing a new image which has a past meaning in the mind of public space owners, be brought into being as an artistic value in the public space by creating visual and perceptual difference in the place they were designed for. As sculpture of a sundial is the part of a relationship, it also --over itself-- bridges over between viewer and time. Therefore, a sundial sculpture to be placed in public space should gain all the plastic components essential for statues of public space; such like socio-cultural structure, memories and physical features of the place, and user needs arising from usage routines of the place.
