A model for improving the spatial quality of public spaces: İstanbul Sadabad and Maçka Democracy Park

Public spaces; Regardless of status, language or culture, they are the areas where everyone can come together and easily change places, provide their daily routines, and socialize, where they can talk about the city. Public spaces not only provide physical information about the city, but also provide information about the social structure of the society. Contrary to its definition in today's metropolises, public spaces have lost the understanding of embracing all differences. In the sense of social segregation, it consisted of private areas where boundaries were not set and differences were not allowed to be included. As a result, it has become a necessity to find solutions to the tension problems created by the necessity of living together. In this context, the general intention of the thesis is to analyze the "public space" again in the context of meaning, function and form, with the need for solution brought by the change. The study will be handled with analytical suggestions for social alienation and tension by creating potentials that allow communication and socialization in accordance with the pluralistic character of the city, within the framework of the "public space" democratic space. In the study; Sadabad Park and Maçka Democracy Park, which are the study area, are not only attraction points, reliability, comfort, accessibility, accessibility, the frequency and variety of activities carried out in public areas, the suitability of the area for activities, cleanliness, but also the relationship between the demographic structure of the users and the activities they perform in the park. has been mentioned The role of parks, which are open public spaces, in structuring the society and their place in the city is important. In this context, the role of public spaces in increasing social awareness and enabling social interactions with different activities is one of the main issues discussed in the context of public spaces in the study. In this context; It has been investigated what routines the users of the selected open public spaces have in these parks, what types of interactions they enter and how much these spaces allow this interaction. In this context, in this study, it is aimed to determine the effects of open public spaces on social relations by considering not only the spatial aspect of the thesis, but also the social characteristics. An urban design guide has been created as a strategic method with the approach of improving public spaces in terms of quality. The general design criteria of the urban design guide created, however, are intended to be used as a source for guides organized at different scales. The histories, location, physical and functional features of Sadabad and Maçka Democracy Park were investigated, and the relationship between the demographic structure of the users using the parks and the activities that took place in the public space was analyzed and their relationship with the spatial quality was analyzed. In this context, the concept of micro intervention has been examined and innovative micro intervention examples in public spaces have been researched in the literature and suggestions have been made to the areas studied in the light of this research.
