Abstract (EN)
Pleural effusion is a common condition in cases of lung cancer and other various cancers. Cancer-induced pleural effusion may appear as the first sign of cancer. In this study, we aimed to evaluate clinical importance of CD133 and HIF-1α in distinguishing cancer-induced pleural effusion from benign effusion. 33 (F/M 14/19) malignant patients with pleural effusion, 21 (M/F 9/12) benign patients with pleural effusion and 24 (11/13) healthy patients who admitted to Health Research and Application Hospital of Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University were included in the study. CD133 (Prominin-1) and HIF1-α levels were measured from the serum samples of these three groups included in the study and pleural fluid samples from malignant and benign groups by using the ELISA method. The relationship of the results obtained was evaluated with each other and with the laboratory parameters. HIF1-α values of the malignant and benign group serums were found to be significantly higher than the healthy control group. However, no significant difference was found between serum and pleural fluid values of malignant and benign groups. No significant difference was also found between serum and pleural fluid CD133 (Prominin-1) values between the groups. However, a strong positive relationship was found between CD133 (Prominin-1) and HIF1-α values. The results of this study suggested that the combined detection of CD133 and HIF-1α parameters may be helpful in diagnosis and predicting the prognosis of the patients with cancer-induced pleural effusion.
