ivCHOOSING OF THE WOOD MATERIALS USED IN PRODUCING KANUNINSTRUMENT AND IN PRODUCTION PHASE OF IT(M.Sc. Thesis)Zeliha ÖZGÜRGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJanuary 2006ABSTRACTPeople choose the music as a tool through the history to express them and todescribe the events that occurred around them. And they give the name ofinstrument to these tools that they used for making the music. For the reasonthat the wood can be found easily in nature and it is sensitive to soundcommunication and it can be worked easily, these tools that called instrumentare made from wood. In producing Kanun, the physical characteristics of woodmaterials like the weight, hardness, degree of humidity and acoustic should betaken into account. Wood must be dried naturally to 5-7% degree of humidity.Appearance characteristics like color and design of the wood that will be used inproducing Kanun are also important. Growing region and growing conditionsof the trees that will be used in producing Kanun should also be taken account.It is possible to use three kind of varnish like shellac varnish, cellulose varnishand polyester varnish in Kanun. In this study, historical development of theKanun instrument, physical characteristics of the wood material that used inproducing Kanun, production phases of Kanun instrument and surfaceprocesses that carried out to the Kanun instrument are studied.Science Code : 705.3.014Key words : KanunNumber of page : 109Adviser : Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmet ŞENEL
