Material culture elements in Byzantine painting in Cappadocia Region

The subject of the thesis is "Material Culture Elements in Byzantine painting Cappadocia Region." This study examines the material culture elements in the churches located in the Cappadocia region, focusing on scenes such as the Annunciation, Nativity of Jesus, Adoration of the Magi, Last Supper, Crucifixion of Jesus, Dormition, and Last Judgment. As a result of the examinations conducted on the scenes identified in 68 churches within the scope of the study, a total of 142 pieces of furniture were identified, including 41 thrones, 53 suppedaneums, 10 stools, 16 beds, and 21 tables; 68 liturgical objects, including 5 censers, 19 chalices, 17 patens, and 27 pitchers; 16 kitchen utensils (dining and serving ware), including 1 pitcher, 7 forks, and 8 knives; 35 military items, including 4 shields, 2 swords, 1 axe and 28 spears; 41 textile materials, including 16 tablecloths, 11 bed covers, 4 curtains, and 10 textiles used for various purposes; 12 materials of jewelry and accessories, including 4 crowns,3 bracelets,3 pazuband; a total of 47 material culture items, including 19 kirmen and 28 water troughs under the heading other were identified. Material culture elements examined under the headings of furniture, liturgical objects, kitchen utensils (dining and serving ware), military equipment, textile materials, jewelry, and accessories were introduced in detail. They were compared with similar examples and supported by photographs and drawings in the study. This approach allowed for the detailed presentation of the forms of material culture elements that have survived to the present day as well as those that may not have, thus helping to determine the functions of the artifacts.
