Evaluation of the drug profiles of patients with cardiovascular disease and admitted to the hospital

In our study, it was aimed to evaluate the drugs used during the hospitalization period of the patients admitted to the cardiology service for any indication and to determine possible medication errors. 110 patients with additional chronic diseases who were hospitalized in the cardiology service of a state hospital for at least 2 days between 25 December 2020 and 25 April 2021 were included in the study. Patient's demographic information, clinical information, drug information used during hospitalization and biochemical test results were obtained from patient files. 59,1% of the patients included in the study were male. 50% of the patients were in the 61-64 age range and the mean hospital stay was 5.2. The diagnoses of the patients during their clinical hospitalization were examined. Accordingly, acute coronary syndrome (33,6%) and heart failure (18,2%) were found to be the most common reasons for hospitalization. In addition, 90% of patients have hypertension. A total of 1061 drugs were prescribed to patients, and the most prescribed drug/drug groups are beta-blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and antiplatelet agents. The mean score according to the MAI score was 9,89, and 480 drugs scored 9. A total of 1024 drug interactions, 76,3% of which were moderate, were detected among the drugs scanned in the Medscape database. The drugs most frequently involved in interactions are Acetylsalicylic acid and Beta-blockers. A total of 89 mismatches of criteria (STOPP: 40, START: 49) were detected in 42 patients evaluated in the STOPP/START criteria. There is a possibility that drugs used in cardiovascular diseases may interact with other drugs. In the presence of additional chronic diseases, the possibility of interaction increases with the increase in the number of drugs. For this reason, the risk of interaction between drugs used in patients using multiple drugs should be evaluated and the follow-up of patients should be planned due to possible side effects.
