A critical approach on modern architecture as the target object of Turkish cartoons through the "cubic house"

Spatial effect of modernization projects in Turkish republican ideology over people reflected in civil architecture. The essentiality of structuring modern house to signify new lifestyle was attempted to be achieved as envisaged by republican ideology. Civil part of modern house structuring, which is acknowledged as a part of political modernization and introduced to public as public architecture, gained increasingly more importance. In general sense Turkish architects, who have no significant effect on public buildings of this period, have been producers and main subject of the civil architecture which strived to be established by Republic. Hence, this study considered it necessary to investigate the civil modernization fact excluding the official ideological publications in order to better understand the perceptual dimension of modernization project. Through this investigation, humor publications, opposing and independent from governing classes, constitutes an important area to reveal the perceptual dimension of modern house. Both in official and civil modernization constructs, new modern house is represented by the term ?cubic house?. Either in architecture or caricatures, cubic houses were attempted to be analyzed through architectural images constructed by using visual reading structure. This analyze revealed the public perception of spatial understanding of cubic house image. In architecture, established understanding of new house was a product of a formal understanding without the conceptual support of which Western archetypes have. In cartoon, instead of uncritical public buildings, criticized new house image became an ideological criticism area through ?cubic houses?.
