Efficacy of carotid stenting in stroke treatment

Purpose: Cerebrovascular disease, is the most important cause of death after cancer and heart diseases in adults all over the world. Stroke is one of the most important causes of carotid artery stenosis. The purpose of our study is to obtain a retrospective review of the endovascular treatment of 324 patients due to the carotid artery stenosis, in our hospital, between October 2004- June 2014, and to compare our results with the existing literature. Materials and Method: In this retrospective study, 337 lesions of 324 patients underwent endovascular treatment for aterosclerotic carotid artery stenosis in Dokuz Eylul University Hospital Interventional Radiology Unit, between October 2004-June 2014, were evaluated. Results: Ages of our patients was ranged from 41 to 90, mean age was 67,56 (SD: 9,08). 243 of our patients (75,0 %) was men and 81 (25,0 %) was women. 47,1 % of patients had hypertension, 27 % of patients had diabetes mellitus, 24,3 % of patients had coronary artery disease, 23,3 % of patients had smoking history, 13,8 % of patients had hyperlipidemia, and 0,6 % of patients had kidney disease. 75 of the patients (23,1 %) was asymptomatic and 249 of the patients (76,8 %) was in symptomatic group. Technical success was 100 % in the carotid stenting. Our average follow-up period was 42,33 months (SD: 26,36). After the procedure, 1 patient (0,3 %) developed major stroke. Four patients (1,2 %) died after the procedure for complications of procedure. Six patients (1,8 %) had restenosis in various degrees. Our cumulative majör stroke+death degrees was 1,5 %. Conclusion: The major stroke and death ratios (cumulatively) of our procedures are only 1,5 % and very low. Carotid stenting can be applied as first choice treatment procedure in revascularization of carotid artery stenosis. Keywords: Carotid stenting, carotis artery stenting.
