Abstract (EN)
This thesis aims to evaluate the current condition of the Aşir Efendi Han, a significant Ottoman-era commercial structure located in the center of Kastamonu, within the framework of preventive conservation principles, and to propose a sustainable conservation approach. In the preservation of historical structures, not only physical interventions but also routine maintenance, monitoring, documentation, and ensuring functional continuity play a crucial role. Within this study, the architectural features, historical development, current use, and structural, environmental, and human-induced threats of the han have been examined through a holistic approach. Qualitative research methods such as on-site observation, photographic documentation, archival analysis, literature review, and expert consultation were employed. The research revealed significant deterioration in the roof structure, including broken and missing tiles, which has led to water infiltration and consequently to moisture, salt crystallization, efflorescence, and biological growth. Cracks were identified in the arcade arches, deformations in the load-bearing walls, and visible losses in façade elements. Additionally, the building was severely affected by the 1943 earthquake, resulting in the collapse of the upper floor and a disturbance in the static balance. Today, the structure is used for various uncontrolled functions such as shops, storage units, and tea houses. The addition of glass enclosures, improper installations, incompatible interior design elements, and signage have compromised both the architectural integrity and aesthetic value of the han. Based on these findings, a phased, documented, and preventive conservation model is proposed. This model encompasses not only physical repairs but also user education, fire and disaster safety measures, routine inspections, restoration techniques appropriate to the building materials, respectful adaptive reuse, and proper documentation. It is further recommended that fire detection systems be installed, drainage systems be improved in accordance with the historical context, and all non-original and damaging additions be removed. Ultimately, the study concludes that a scientifically grounded and integrated conservation strategy is the most effective method to ensure the Aşir Efendi Han is preserved and transmitted to future generations in its authentic form.
