The usage of gis in landfill site selection: Case study Side-Manavgat tourism region

ABSTRACT THE USAGE OF GIS IN LANDFILL SITE SELECTION: CASE STUDY SIDE-MANAVGAT TOURISM REGION ilkem BAHÇECİ M.Sc. Thesis, Department of Environmental Engineering Adviser: Prof. Dr. Bülent TOPKAYA May 2006, 94 pages Side-Manavgat region is one of the most important tourism centers of Antalya Province. The population increase rates in the residential centers along the 55 km coastal zone are above the Turkish average. While the population increase rate of Turkey in the period of 1990-2000 was 1,8 %; the average population increase rate of Side-Manavgat tourism region was 5,6 %. As the population of the region was 199385 in 2000, it is expected that ft will exceed 500000 in 2030. Additionally, it is planned to increase the present bed capacity of the touristic facilities, which is 70000, to 110000 in 2030. Also it is estimated that the environmental effects of this population increase, solid waste production, will increase from 82450 tons/year to 200000 tons/year in the period of 2000-2030. So in order to dispose these domestic solid wastes 150000. m3 storage area will be needed each year. By segregation of solid wastes at source and land filling only the wastes which cannot be recycled, will decrease the volume of the storage area by 75 %. However, as the tourism activities are conducted in a wide extended region in Antalya, landfill site selection process takes so many reactions from public, which makes the determination of alternative places harder. In this respect it is argued that this problem can be solved by using GIS. In this study, concerning Manavgat-Side region, the alternative landfill sites are determined by using GIS.
