Abstract (EN)

In this study, we have analyzed the effects of ramp metering on freeway traffic flows. Trafficcongestion on setting by vehicles passing through Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul could beremoved or at least ameliorated by utilizing ramp metering techniques as a trafficmanagement option. We give some descriptive information about speed, flow (volume) and density together withtheir interrelationships. Additionally, some background on freeway traffic management (e.g.,its goals and types; congestion and its causes) was provided. We gave a special attention toramp metering, its goals, types and implementation methods in a comparative manner.TSIS/CORSIM software was used to simulate O-1 freeway sections approaching toBosphorus Bridge in Asia to Europe direction. In the simulation model, a ramp meteringapplication was performed and it consequences were analyzed.Simulation study was showed that ramp metering control option was superior to the onewithout control (i.e., current situation), especially for the mainline sections. Travel timebenefit is significant (10.85% improvement). However, the side effects of ramp meteringimplementation should be given a special interest. It is recommended that such implicationsshould first be simulated in computer environment.Key words: Ramp metering, simulation, traffic congestion, Bosphorus Bridge, freeway trafficmanagementxi
