Citizen journalism in the context of participatory democratic media theory: The case of Onedio

With the increasing importance of digital media and technology in our lives, the place of citizen journalism and participatory journalism in the media has become questionable. In particular, announcing the news in the local media and the importance of accessing instant and inaccessible news has increased the need for citizen journalism. The versatile communication provided by digital media has supported the development of citizen and participatory journalism. With this support, interest in and participation in digital media was also provided. Onedio news site is one of the largest citizen journalism platforms established on August 1, 2012 to provide news and data flow from all users. which previously applied examples in the world, but a first user-derived content of this site based in Turkey has reached 60 million hits monthly figures in a short time. Most of the content of this site, which has managed to be among the giants of digital media, is produced and published by its users. The aim of this thesis is to examine citizen and participatory journalism in the context of content production and to examine its transformation into a major news media on this site. In this way, it is aimed to show the importance of citizen journalism and the liberating space it has provided with the effect of new media.
