Abstract (TR)
IV ABSTRACT In present day, eastern Mediterranean is controlled by the collision of the African and Eurasian plates and displacements of Arabian, Anatolian and Eagean micro- plates. The boundary between African and Eurasian plates is delineated by the Hellenic arc and Pliny-Strabo trench in the west and the Cyprus arc and a diffuse fault system of the Eastern Anatolian Fault zone in the east. The seismic researches done between Cyprus and the coast of Israel have examined the structure of the crust of that region. In addition the Eratosthenes seamount is a continental crust subducting under Cyprus in the north, Levantine basin in the south and Mediterranean ridge in the west. High anomalies observed in Cyprus and the sea region at the south are prominent in the gravity data. The bouger anomaly reaches its maximum values over Cyprus, where it is most probably caused by high dense Troodos ophiolites. High Bouger anomaly also seen in the vicinity of Eratosthenes Seamount is caused by the uplifted oceanic crust. Another result obtained from gravity data is that the crust under Herodot and Rhodos basins is oceanic and Anaximander, Eratosthenes and Cyprus are continental fragments. There are no linear magnetic anomaliesin the Mediterranean. But there are magnetic anomalies over the Eratosthenes seamount and as well as from Cyprus to the Antalya basin due to the ophiolithic bodies. High resolution seismic reflection data obtained from Training Through Research 1991 cruise add much available profiles in this area and enable its detailed examination. The interpretation of these data reveals that south edge of the Anotolian plate comprises three additional steps. Eastern Meditterranean is divided into several basins by vertical movements. The last step is delineated by the prominent West Tartus Ridge. The great difference in the shallow and deep geological structure north and south of the West Tartus Ridge leads us inevitably to the conclusion that this ridge is the modern southern boundary of the Anatolian.
