The conditions for the use of human medicine in cat and dogs

Drug utilisation in cat and dog clinics is quite common for various goals in Veterinary Medicine. In the study, the position of human medicine in cat and dog clinics, the reasons to use them, pharmacological data, the accuracy of prescriptions and negative and positive sides of the medicine are analyzed. In the study, the questionnaire including 11 questions was applied in pet clinics in service in different provinces of Turkey. In addition to questionnaire form, the prescription belonging to the animal examined was requested. 172 questionnaires in total were analyzed and assessed. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS statistics program. Considering the results of the study, it is seen that five human medicines at most are used on dogs (55,8%). It was determined that the dosage was calculated largely (92,4%) by comparing the live weight of the animal. It was stated that human medicine is commonly used as they do not have veterinary preparations (65,7%). It was determined that the most important reason to prefer human medicine is that these medicines are easy to supply (68,6%). It was reported that the dosage of the medicine used was calculated according to the active agents in human medicine (94,4%). The side effects observed depending on the medicine that were used are not frequent and the problem was solved by not using the medicine with side effects again (87,8%). It was determined that there are not enough veterinary medicine to be used on cats and dogs (45,3%). The most needed veterinary preparation was determined to be cardiovascular medicine and hormones (23,8%). As a result, insufficiency of veterinary preparations used in cat and dog clinics, the problems related to the dosage regime of human medicines and their side effects in our country are prominently observed. This study reveals the necessity to prepare veterinary preparations and put them on the market, to solve the problems related to the usage of human medicine and to generalise veterinary preparation variety similar to the ones in developed countries in our country.
