Abstract (EN)

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of various anesthetic combinations on cat's tears production and intraocular pressure. Material and Methods The study included 28 cats of various breeds, ages, weights, and genders brought to the Aydin Adnan Menderes University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Surgery for treatment but had healthy eye health. Animals that need to undergo surgery were divided randomly into four groups of seven for this study. Medetomidine was used as a pre-anesthetic on the first and second groups of animals, while midazolam was used as a pre-anesthetic on the third and fourth groups. Ketamine was used as the induction agent on all animals. Then, endotracheal tubes with the right diameter for the animals were used for intubation. After the animals were intubated, groups I. and III. received isoflurane, while groups II. and IV. received sevoflurane. The carrier gas was delivered as 100% oxygen. Before anaesthesia, after induction, at 15 and 30 minutes of anesthesia, after extubating and 60 min after the end of anaesthesia, tear volume, intraocular pressure in the all animals were recorded Resuts: During the intraanesthetic period, STT I measurement values (T1) in all groups and in both eyes decreased compared to the baseline (T0). It was found that this decline was statistically significant. This decrease was determined 1.00±0.00 mm/min in the right eye and 1.57±1.13 mm/min in the left eye in the lowest group I. prior to anesthesia, upon induction, and throughout the intraanesthetic period, IOP levels increased and decreased within the normal ranges. There was a statistically significant difference in IOP values in the sevoflurane groups (II-IV). Conclusion: In the various anesthetic combinations used on cats, there were no complications during the anesthesia. The amount of tears statistically significantly decreased while intraocular pressure changed within normal ranges in the anesthetic combinations used. Keywords: Cat, anesthesia, amount of tears, intraocular pressure
