Evaluation of the effects of sevoflurane administration in general anaesthesia on renal resistive index by intraoperative doppler ultrasonography in cats

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of inhalation anaesthesia with sevoflurane on the renal resistive index (RI) in cats by intraoperative Doppler ultrasonography. The study material consisted of 20 cats of different ages, weights, breeds, and sexes, all of which were brought to Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital for elective surgery, especially castration, and were evaluated as healthy in terms of the general and urinary system in clinical examination. The cats were divided into two groups of 10 according to sevoflurane and isoflurane administration. In ultrasonographic Doppler examinations, preoperative renal RI values were measured by obtaining at least three consecutive Doppler spectra from the interlobar or arcuate arteries at the cranial, middle and caudal poles of both kidneys. Cefazolin 22 mg/kg and butorphanol 0,1 mg/kg were administered intravenously to all cats for premedication before the operation. Propofol 4-6 mg/kg was administered intravenously for induction of anaesthesia. Anaesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane in one group and isoflurane in the other group. The preoperative renal RI measurement protocol was followed exactly and intraoperative measurements were performed at minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) 1.2, MAC 1.5, and MAC 1.7. As a result of inhalation anaesthesia with sevoflurane and isoflurane volatile anaesthetics in cats, it was found that the renal RI and pulsatility index (PI) values obtained by ultrasonographic Doppler examinations increased with the increase in the minimum alveolar concentrations. It was determined that the increases in the renal RI and PI values did not differ according to sevoflurane and isoflurane volatile anaesthetic types.
