The effect of Rolland method on violin playing skills in violin education

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of the beginner level violin training provided by Rolland method and traditional violin training method on violin playing skill and to determine the opinion of the students about Rolland method trained by using the method. Descriptive sequential mixed method pattern which is a mixed method pattern was used in the research. The quantitative dimension of the study consists of design with post-test unequalled group and pre-test-post-test experimental design. Focus group interview was used for qualitative dimension of the study. The working group of the study consists of ten university students taking education in the department of Performing arts, the Theatre Department at Bülent Ecevit University State Conservatory in 2018-2019 academic year but hadn't taken violin training earlier. "Performance Evaluation Form of Violin Course" created by the researcher in the light of the view of leading experts in the area was used to obtain quantitative data while focus group interview was conducted to obtain qualitative data from experimental group. Man Whitney-U test which is one of non-parametric test was used in the comparison new data between experimental and control group while Wilcoxon test was used in repetitive measurement between the mid and the post test, and to determine the reliability and coefficient concordance among the points given by the experts Kendall's coefficient of concordance (Kendall's W) was used. The qualitative data obtained after focus group interview was processed by using descriptive analysis method and interpreted by researcher under the main headings. The quantitative data obtained from the research was analysed and then interpreted by IBM SPSS Statistics ver 25. At the end of the research it was determined that in the training process of the experimental group who took their violin training based on Rolland method didn't experience any performance loss, but had undergone a significant difference in the violin playing skills known as instrument set up and use, posture, left and right hand use, bow use, rhytm and intonation, and that they developed positive opinions unlike the control group who received their training based on traditional violin training.
