Thesis) Mutlu TÜRKMEN GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY August 2001 ABSTRACT This thesis divides into two major sections. In the first section the conceptual basis for urban mass transportation and the criterions which are considered for mode choice are pointed out. In this way the reasons that necessitate the rail transit systems as the only solution for transportation problems are determined. In the second section Ankara Metrosu and Ankaray samples are analyzed and compared to other existing systems in different countries. Through this analysis and comparison the performance and plannig processes of both systems is criticised.
