Evaluation of precautions that can be taken against vehicle bomb attacks in the context of city-building relationship with multi-criteria decision-making methods

From the past to the present, several bomb attacks on buildings have occurred as part of terrorist activities, resulting in significant loss of life and damage. In the previous 40 years, four bomb attacks targeting transportation structures and their environs have occurred in Turkey, which is one country most threatened by terrorism activity because of its strategic location. The explosive effect increasing with the developing technology causes taking security measures to protect these structures, which were chosen as targets in the past. This thesis focuses on incorporating security measures into transportation structures for protecting structures and discussing ways to reduce the effects of terrorist attacks on transportation structures. The major research subjects of the thesis are the evaluation of design criteria for the safe design of high-speed train stations and airports, which are transportation structures. First, it has been investigated that the damage to the structures depends on the characteristics of the explosion. Then, in the literature light, the standards and expert opinions of different countries were included, and precautions to be taken in the relationship between the city and the building, especially in vehicle bomb attacks, were determined. Because of the complex and uncertain nature of design decisions, these measures were evaluated using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) from the Multi-criteria Decision-making (MCDM) method. According to the assessments, parcel arrangements are the most successful component of bomb strikes. The following stage was to analyse railway station and airport instances. In the evaluations, airports perform better against vehicle bomb assaults in the city-structure relationship than railway stations. Finally, suggestions are presented for the building and its surroundings against the bomb attacks in the city.
