The effect of urban transformation on social memory (Malatya example)

In the study, it was investigated what kind of changes the urban transformation realized in Malatya province brought about in social memory. Intensive urbanization and urbanization brought along slums. The formation of slums and the individuals who settle there bring their culture and habits with it. It is, of course, normal for individuals who have migrated and have lived in a place for many years to belong to their place. To what extent these transformations in urban spaces have been made in consideration of regional needs, answers are sought to these questions. The study was reached to the participants using the qualitative research method. A semi-structured interview was held. In the interview with 30 participants, the participant population was tried to be limited by paying attention to the fact that the participants borrowed their houses in return for their houses. Considering the width of the urban transformation area, the areas realized by TOKI were selected. Among the areas included in the mass housing project in the province of Malatya; Beydağı neighborhood, Yamaç neighborhood, Fırat neighborhood and Yavuz Selim neighborhood were selected. It is aimed to obtain a general interpretation with the method of induction by using the data obtained through observation and interview, what kind of transformations have been experienced in the behavioral patterns and mental worlds of individuals who have resided in these fields for many years. If we talk about the findings obtained from the observations and interviews, it has been stated what kind of transformations the urban transformation has experienced in the memory world of people. The transformation in the space has also created a change in behavior patterns. Problems experienced in adapting to urban life cause problems in individuals' sense of belonging. It has been observed that individuals who do not have a sense of belonging become alienated from the place. Urban transformation has created many differences.
