Özet (EN)
The Ports have always been the structures which provided the cities economically, andinfluenced settlements to form in the surroundings since the primitive and medieval ages. Inthe 19th century, ports concepts have evolved by gaining new functions. Maritimetransportation, has weakened as they contained the land, railway, and air transportation'sfunctions within themselves, yet they have never been exctinct. Still a currently preferredtransportation system, maritime transportation has gone through certain changes in theirfacility layouts due to technological innovations brought by the 21st century. The ports varyin 3 major generations. The factors which impact the ports' functions, the tecnological improvements in shipping, andcargo transportation, the changes in cargo types and volume, the changes in maritime routesand their impact on the locational changes are explained in this thesis' content in detail. Theport zones are evaluated in three different eras (periods) taking the pro and post modern portsinto consideration.Due to the fact that 19th century ports were lacking the space, buildings, and theinfrastructures and their inabilty to cope these conditions caused them to lose their functions. Most of the old ports which were not able to function as new modern ones, and those whichwere near the center of the cities, are replaced with new port zones. By doing so, the old portzones are either evacuated completely or designed to serve different port functions. As examples to cities which have lost their port functions, 4 major ones have been selectedwhich are: NewYork, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Istanbul port cities. The geographicallocations of these cities, their economical structures in relation to the cities and socio-demographic context (as population ratios, and transportation web) have been examined. Inadditon to that, the plans which are designed for the regeneration of these zones and theirlocational and urban consequences have been mentioned. And to conclude, reason-consequence relations have been formed about these port cities'losing their functions via the examples. In relation to these results, regeneration of theKaraköy-Salıpazarı port zone In relation to these results, the factors which need to be takeninto consideration for the regeneration of the karakoy-salipazari port zone, are mentioned. Keywords: Regeneration, port, waterfront, Karaköy -Salıpazarıx
