Squares in urban space formation: A case study of Ankara Ulus Square

Today, as a result of the rapid increase in population and the advancement of technology, urban spaces are formed based on the relationship between urban people and urban social spaces and serving different functions. Squares are important focal points of the city, where people gather, engage in activities and spend time. Within the scope of this study, physical, social, cultural dimensions, identity and functionality elements of spatial formation values in urban squares as urban spaces were discussed and spatial value equivalents were read. The historical development and typologies of the squares are restricted to the "early republican period" and the fact of the Square has been discussed. The approaches to the challenge were examined through examples according to the way they were dealt with. In the squares, the factors that make up the "urban space" were investigated. In terms of the relationship between squares and urban space, an approach and a way of handling were determined and their joint readings were made. The study data was evaluated on" Ankara Ulus Square". Evaluation; the urban space approaches of the squares were constructed through the components that make up the urban space identified in the study and examples were made through Ankara "Ulus Square".
