An approach to sustainability in urban renewal zones – the case of Antalya Balbey

In urban renewal projects, it is seen that projects that are not adopted by the users (local people) and participants (visitors, tourists) and do not meet their expectations are produced and implemented. In fact, when these projects are implemented, the local people leave the region and the user profile changes. For these reasons, the definition of urban renewal as a multidimensional action area through a sample area and the criteria that the project design should provide for local user expectations and sustainability will be investigated. In this context; It is aimed to reveal the principles of the concept of sustainable urban renewal, to examine its economic, social and environmental components, and to evaluate the conditions of sustainability, and to propose a sustainable urban renewal approach in Antalya Balbey District as a case study. In the study, a questionnaire was applied to the residents of Balbey Neighborhood and the individuals who came to visit the neighborhood. Based on the data and opinions obtained from the applied questionnaires, the findings based on observation and environmental analyzes and the criteria that can be used as an input to the design were put forward. Due to its location close to the city center, the creation of spaces that will increase the quality of life in line with needs and needs, the widespread use of parking lots in the area and the characteristic texture of the area cannot be read, the problems of security and technical infrastructure inadequacies are solved, the historical structure should not change as stated by both the participant and the user, it is suggested that the high-rise construction located on the periphery of the neighborhood should be planned according to the silhouette suitable for the urban texture, in order to become a tourism center and attraction center without deteriorating its structure and natural architecture, and to be noticed and perceived.
