Abstract (EN)
Kashmir, often referred to as "the heart of Asia" and "the crown and jewel of India," is considered by its own people to be one of the world's most beautiful places, deserving of the title "valley of paradise." It is bordered by India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and Tibet. Located in a corridor opening from Turkistan to India, the region is built on extremely rugged terrain in the Himalayas, the world's highest mountain range. Despite this, its strategic and geographical characteristics have made it the site of many political, military, religious, and commercial events since the earliest periods of history. Kashmir, which retains its strategic importance today, is a decisive factor in South Asian politics. Kashmir is a region of strategic importance that has been home to different religions and beliefs systems such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam throughout history. Islamic armies that launched campaigns to conquer India attempted to seize Kashmir; however, they were unsuccessful in their endeavors due to the region's challenging geographical conditions. With the rise to power of the Shah Mirza Dynasty, a Muslim dynasty, the region began its transition from a kingdom to a sultanate. The Kashmir Sultanate, which ruled from 1339 to 1586, was governed successively by the Shah Mirza and Chak Dynasties. During the reign of Sultan Zeynel Abidin, the Kashmir Sultanate experienced its most powerful period politically, economically, and culturally. However, during the reign of the Chak Dynasty, which took power after the Shah Mirza Dynasty, increasing power vacuums, political and religious conflicts, and internal rebellions destabilized the region. Taking advantage of this situation, Haydar Mirza Duglat established temporary rule in Kashmir on behalf of the Mughals. However, after his ten-year reign, the Chak Dynasty regained control of the region. The Mughal emperor Akbar Shah seized Kashmir in 1586, taking advantage of the instability caused by internal turmoil and Sunni-Shia conflicts during the reign of Sultan Yakub Shah of the Chak Dynasty. The Mughals established full control over the region in 1589.
