The effect of case-based learning instruction of chemical reaction rate on students conceptual understanding

This study has been done for the aim to compare the conceptual change on chemical reaction rate and the success of the students who are learning by traditional education and case base learning methods.In the study, a concept test which was improved by Çakmakcı (2005) and an achievement test that was improved during the study on chemical rate were used as collecting data.On the first term of 2013-2014 Academic Year in Bornova Anatolian High School, two groups of 11th class students were chosen by chance and one of them was the experiment (n=26), the other was the control group (n=22). An achievement test and a concept test were applied as pre-test before the experiment. At the end of the test, it was proved that there wasn't an important difference among the groups according to the results of "t" test on SPSS 13.0 programme and the students had alternative conceptions. The subject of chemical reaction rate was taught by case base learning in experiment group and it was taught by traditional method in 8 lesson hours in control group. After the experiment, achievement test and concept test were applied as the last test. At the end, according to "t" test results, it was brought up that there were differences in achievement and conceptual tests of the students in experiment and control groups and it was seen that experiment group students were more succesfull. And also alternative conceptions were mostly removed according to the results of pre-test of conceptions. Keywords: Case Base Learning, Chemical Reaction Rate, Achievement Test, Concept Test
