The issue of superiority between verse and prose in classical Arabic literature and the opinion of Abu'l-Qâsim al-İshbîlî on this issue

In this study, the superiority between verse and prose, which is one of the issues of criticism of Arabic literature, was examined focusing on Arabic literature before Abu'l-Qâsim al-Ishbîlî and on Abu'l-Qâsim al-Ishbîlî The aim of the study is to indicate which views were put forward on the issue in Arabic literature before al-Ishbîlî, to bring the knowledges about al-Ishbîlî to Turkish literaure and to examine how he handled this issue in his work named Ihkâm san'ati'l-kalâm. The thesis consists of two chapters. In Chapter one, the definitions of verse, poetry and prose were given, the interaction between Aristotle, Islamic Peripatetic philosophers and Arab litterateurs was revealed and then the views of scholars before al-Ishbîlî were explained under three headings as "those who give priority to verse", "those who give priority to prose" and "those who adopt a conciliatory approach". In chapter two, information about al-Ishbîlî's life, education, works and his only work that has survied to our day by the name of Ihkâm san'ati'l-kalām was given and then the author's views in this work on the issue of superiority between verse and prose were stated.
