Abstract (EN)
Child education in Ancient Greece underwent significant transformations between the Classical (5th–4th century BCE) and Hellenistic (4th–1st century BCE) periods, shaped by evolving political, social, and cultural structures. While education in the Classical era primarily served the ideological and civic needs of the state, the Hellenistic period saw a shift toward individual intellectual development and broader cultural engagement. In Athens, education was designed to promote democratic citizenship, critical thinking, and philosophical inquiry. Boys received a well-rounded education through instructors such as the Grammatistes (literacy), Kitharistes (music), and Paidotribes (physical education). In contrast, Sparta's education system was military-oriented, emphasizing physical strength, endurance, and communal discipline. Both boys and girls underwent physical training to reinforce the city-state's martial values. During the Hellenistic period, the expansion of Greek culture under Alexander the Great's conquests led to the diversification and institutionalization of education. Philosophical schools such as Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum became centers of intellectual activity, emphasizing logic, science, literature, and rhetoric. Although still limited, female education became more accessible, especially among the aristocracy, with some women gaining prominence as philosophers and intellectuals. In conclusion, Classical Greek education prioritized collective civic responsibility, while the Hellenistic approach promoted individual intellectual cultivation. This pedagogical evolution reflects not only political transformations but also the intercultural exchanges that defined the Hellenistic world.
