Rose in classical Turkish poems (Rose in ghazals)

In this study which has been prepared as a PhD thesis, the divans of nearly 120 poets who lived between 14th and 19th centuries have been scanned; and in the ghazal parts of these pieces of art, it has been aimed to determine within which meaning relationships rose has been used, and how the use of rose in the social life has been reflected to the poems via analyzing the sample verses. The main goal of the study is to identify how deeply rose – unlike other flowers – has impressed on our culture. Within this respect, firstly, the history of rose and the perception of it in social life, art, and monotheistic religions have been mentioned; and then samples have been given to show how the characteristics of rose as a flower are reflected to the verses. In the upcoming parts, sample verses as to rose's unique usages such as in traditions and customs, clothing, kitchen, treatment of the illnesses, islamic mysticism, cosmic universe and etc have been presented; and it has been aimed to figure out how these verses have emerged by coming together with which art in the poet's imagination. During the research, for each subtitle, those which we consider as the most beautiful samples among the tens of thousands of verses that we came across have been included in this study. Owing to the authenticity of some imaginations, other types of verse like eulogy and stanza have also been exemplified. Moreover, some poets whose mystic identities stand out have also been examined in order to realise the mystic usages of rose better and more clearly. In short, it has been aimed to determine how the poets transformed rose with its real and figurative aspects into their poems; and the results that have been found have been presented in the "results" part. As a consequence of the research, a small "dictionary of rose" has been formed and added at the end of the study.
