Abstract (EN)
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and types of HPV in patients with normal cytology; and the colposcopy and biopsy results of these files Materials and Methods: In this study, the data were collected retrospectively from the patients who applied to Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University Faculty of Medicine, Mengücekgazi Training and Research Hospital, Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic between January 2015 and December 2019. The sample of the study consisted of 508 patients who were found to be HPV positive but have normal cytology results. Their results of colposcopy and advanced examination (i.e., cervical biopsy, leep) were compared and evaluated. The patients with positive cytology tests were excluded from the study. Age, educational status, body mass indexes and smoking status of the patients were also taken into consideration while analyzing the data. The data were classified and then analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 22 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) program. Pearson Chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. In the results, p <0.05 value was considered statistically significant. Results: In this study, biopsy results were divided into three groups as Group 1: HPV type 16-18; Group 2: 16-18 non-type HR- HPV positive patients; and Group 3: other HPV types. The biopsy results (i.e., benign, CIN I, CIN II, CIN III and SCC) were compared and evaluated in each group. A significant difference was found between the biopsy results of Group 1 patients, including HPV type 16-18 positive patients. Abnormal biopsy results in HPV type 16-18 positive patients were 32.1% and were higher than the other two groups. Out of 126 patients with HPV positivity, except for HPV type 16 - 18, 21 (16.6%) patients had CIN I, 8 (6.3%) patients had CIN II and 7 (5.5%) patients had CIN III lesions. Conclusion: HPV tests indicated pre-invasive and invasive lesions among the patients who were evaluated as normal by cervical cytology. We would like to emphasize that colposcopy may be beneficial for 16-18 non-type HR-HPV positive patients with normal cervical cytology results due to the fact that cervical pre-invasive and invasive lesions can be developed among those groups of patients. Key Words: Colposcopy, HGSIL, LGSIL, HPV
