Abstract (EN)

Klebsiella Pneumonıae is a major cause of nosocomial infections. Antibiotic-resistant K. pneumoniae are becoming more common worldwide. The capacity of K. pneumoniae to produce biofilms complicates patient care even further. This study aimed to detect and compare between clinical and food origin Klebsiella isolates ability to form biofilm and resistance to antibiotics both on the phenotypic and genetic level in order to propose a control strategy. A total of two hundred clinical and food samples were included in this study. The results revealed that 34 K. pneumoniae isolates (15 clinical and 19 foodborne). Sixteen K. pneumoniae isolates (47.05%) were extended spectrum beta lactamase producers (ESBL). Theses ESBL were found to be biofilm producers. Genetic detection of two genes was performed and the results revealed that all the isolates carried luxS gene and some of them carried blaOXA-48 gene. It may be concluded that luxS gene is common in local K. pneumoniae isolates that have the ability to form biofilm. While ESBL production may be only partially related to blaOXA-48 gene.
