Approach of clinical laboratory employees to patient safety practices

Introduction and Aim: If the process from sampling to reporting and interpreting the patient is not correctly defined, any errors that may occur will adversely affect the diagnosis and treatment of the patient and will prolong the patient's healing process and endanger patient safety. This study was planned to evaluate the clinical safety of patients in the clinical laboratory and to define the variability among different occupational groups. Method: This descriptive study was conducted between 15 June and 15 August 2018. The sample of this study consisted of 130 personal working in a university clinical laboratory. datas were collected by using sociodemographic information form and patient safety approach form. The Mann Whitney U-test and the Kruskal Wallis H-test were used to test whether there was a significant difference between the groups in the groups; Mann Whitney U-test was used for the measurement of bilateral groups. Spearman test was used for the degree and direction of the relationship between the questions. Results: It was found that 34.6% of the participants were between 40-49 years of age, 64.6% of them were women, 48.5% of them were technicians / technicians, and 77.7% of them participated in patient safety education. There were statistically significant differences between the participants' responses to "Human resources are sufficient in this laboratory", "Denied Samples Are Registered and Reported", "Panic Values and Panic Value Notification Process rules are complied for Manual and Automated Tests", "Procedures and Instructions for Patient and Employee are Safety and Adequate", "I received the necessary training to do my job" questions and the laboratories they studied (p<0.001), (p<0.001), (p < 0.001), (p < 0.001), (p=0.001).According to occupational variables, there was statistically significant difference between the answers given to the question "Patient non identificated, but Probability of Failure in Labeled Specimens (p = 0.001). 4 Conclusion: In order for the Services to be maintained safely in terms of patient safety, employees in clinical laboratories should adopt the patient safety culture and use them in all work processes.
