Investigation of the effects of different canal instruments and irrigation solutions used in root canals on smear layer

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of three different root canal shaping device and three different irrigation solutions on the smear layer of root canal on apical, medium and coronal sites.As root canal shaping device, hand tool (Hedström file), and as rotary intruments Protoper and Mtwo filing systems were used. As irrigation solutions, however, 2,5 % NaOCl, 17% EDTA + %2,5 NaOCl and 2,5 % NaOCl + BioPure MTAD were used.In our study,72 upper incisive teeth were used randomly divided into 9 groups. Those in groups 1,2 and 3 were shaped Hedström file,those in groups 4, 5 and 6 with Protoper file, and those in groups 7, 8 and 9 were shaped with Mtwo file. In all groups, 2,5 % NaOCl was used after each change of file. Groups 1,4 and 7 were determined as controls, in final washing, 2,5 % NaOCl was used. For groups 2, 5 and 8, 17% EDTA + %2,5 NaOCl was used in final washing, while for groups 3,6 and 9 2,5 % NaOCl + BioPure MTAD was used.Following completion of all these procedures groves were opened towards bucco-lingual direction, and the teeth were divided into two separate group. Then, levels of 2, 6 and 10 mm from apical of the root were examined by Scanning Electron Microscope.It was determined that the most effective combination was Mtwo/MTAD at apical site, Hand tool/EDTA and Mtwo/EDTA at coronal.In conclusion, it was found that the instruments and irrigation solutions used was of utmost importance in the success of root canal treatment.
