Retrospective analysis of iatrogenic colon perforations during colonoscopy

Abstract (EN)
Iatrogenic colon perforations were seen in the general population at a rate of 0.3-0.65%. Usable colonoscopy is the most reliable test for colon pathology. Colonoscopy complications are rare but the most serious complication is iatrogenic colon perforation. The construction of our study was to evaluate the risk factors that cause this complication and to investigate the effects of patient factors on postoperative complications by examining the diagnostic and treatment methods in case the neighboring development improves. 17,505 patients underwent colonoscopy at Akdeniz University Hospital Gastroendoscopy Unit after iatrogenic perforation perforation rate was found as 0.013%. Perforation rate was 0.015% for female and 0.013% for male. The mean age was 57.47, whereas the mean age was 63.42 years. Female gender and advanced age were generally supported as risk factors for the development of perforation. Perforation was detected in the 24 patients and 20 of the patients has comorbidity. Comorbidity increases the rate of postoperative complications and hospitalization was found to compromise. In our study, the mortality rate was found to be 12.5%. It was observed that hospitalization time was shorter and complication rates were lower in the colonoscopy system. The overall rates of other risk factors such as the presence of diverticulosis, a history of previous abdominal surgery and a history of radiotherapy in the literature are not fully supported in our study. The results obtained with robust data sources and prospective studies will be more reliable.
