Evaluation of the role of column in architectural design

The essence of architectural creation, which can be defined physically and abstractly by many components, is the effort to create space. From the process in which primitive people started to form the history of civilization, to the present day; the power of communication has strengthened with the development of social life. The architectural structures, simply and that are oriented only to the needs has become in time turned into multi-layered and depending on various parameters. One of the primary instrument that make architectural creation possible is the structure. All living and inanimate beings maintain their physical integrity thanks to their structural integrity. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the physical existence, development and diversity of the structure, the impact on architectural creation, through the column element which is also a part of the structure. The column serves as a carrier element in structural system. This is the primary task of the column. The scope of the thesis is on the questioning of the tasks that the column undertakes as an architectural element other than the carrier. In this respect, the concept of structure has been examined and discussions have been made on the concepts of space, form and meaning. As a result, it was understood that the column was a part of architectural design, used as a tool for creating space and form, and could be constructed as an element that conveys meaning.
