Examination of housing development in the case of Malatya

In the historical process, Malatya has been preferred and used uninterruptedly by many civilisations as a settlement area from past to present due to factors such as its location, geography, climatic conditions and land being suitable for life and being on important road routes. Population growth, urbanisation and the development of technology have brought the concept of storey buildings to the agenda in the world and in Turkey. The aim of the study is to examine the increasing housing development in the city of Malatya. In the second part of the study, academic studies on the city of Malatya and housing have been extensively reviewed and the theoretical framework of the study has been established. In the third part of the study, the geographical, geological, demographic and economic structure and spatial structure of the city in the historical process and with the narrative of travellers, planning studies in the city were investigated, a method was proposed to investigate the housing development in the city, the houses located on the streets selected for the field study in Battalgazi and Yeşilyurt districts were photographed and architectural projects were obtained. In the third part of the study, the geographical, geological, demographic and economic structure of the city, the spatial structure of the city in the historical process and with the narrative of travellers, planning studies in the city were investigated, a method was proposed to investigate the development of storeyed housing in the city, storeyed housing in the streets selected for fieldwork in Battalgazi and Yeşilyurt districts were photographed and architectural projects were obtained. The houses were analysed through on-site observations, their spatial structures were discussed and interpreted with Google Earth images from 2000 and 2024. In the fourth part of the study, the findings are discussed. In the conclusion part of the study, with the data obtained from the field study and analyses, the current and possible future situation of the houses in Malatya and to what extent and in what direction the houses can change the development of the city are discussed and suggestions for spatial organisation are presented.
