Cerebellar volume in patients with conversion disorder

Conversion disorder (CD) is defined as motor, sensory and autonomic nervous system in the body show loss, reduction or degradation of function not based on an organic basis. In recent years, pathological findings showing signs of brain dysfunction in patients with conversion disorder are reported. With this purpose we did this purpose we planned cerebellar volumetric assessment study. 19 patients treated in psychiatry clinic of Fırat University Medical Centerwith the diagnose of conversion disorder according to the SCID-I with the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV and 19 people from healthy individuals matched for age and sex of the patient groups were recruited to the study.The study was conducted with all subjects included in the psychiatric interview and demographic data forms were completed. Patients and controls fulfilled the Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory Scale.Using a 1.5 Tesla GE Signa Excite system for devices with high resolution T1-weighted imaging and three-dimensional spiral sagittal fast spin echo MR images were obtained. The images were committed in the workstation and the volume was calculated. Volume measurements were made by two assessors to be blind to the diagnosis. Means cores of BAI and BDI 31.05 ± 10.36 23.26 ± 7.68 showed the high levels of anxiety and moderate levels of depression in patients. Conversion disorder in the "lack of brain findings explaining the disorder" is still considered as a diagnostic criterion. No volumetric data associated with the pathophysiology of conversion disorder is found. Our findings verify this information now in terms of the cerebellum. We believe that our study may be a guide for further studies including both sexes and with larger groups. Key Words:Cerebellum; Conversion Disorder; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Organ Size
