Abstract (EN)

Aksaray, Karaman and Konya provinces are in a central region of modern Turkey and also were the same for Seljuk State. In the region, there are numerous historical buildings related to the Seljuk, Principalities and Ottoman periods. Some of the aforementioned historical buildings are the grand mosques which were the greatest mosques of the provinces they belonged at the time they were built. This is because of the fact that, in Islam, it is appropriate to perform Friday prayers in only one mosque at one settlement. In this study, the grand mosques, members of our cultural heritage, which are located in the cities of Aksaray, Karaman and Konya are gathered and been through an investigation which is conducted on their current situations. The study consists of six parts. In the first part of the study, the definition, aim and method of the subject are presented and a source research is made. In the second chapter, the geography, history and main characteristics of the cities of Aksaray, Karaman and Konya are presented. In the third chapter, the definition of mosque is made and the historical development of mosques is explained with examples. In the fourth chapter, the current situations of the grand mosques, which are among the subject, are presented and on-site examinations and researches about the mosques are added. In the fifth part of the study, the grand mosques in the subject are evaluated in terms of plans, façades, material and decoration features. And in the sixth and final part of the study, the conclusions are made based on the evaluations made before.
