Clinical, haemotological, biochemical and cardiovascular effect anesthetized dog with halothane and sevoflurane

Abstract (EN)
6 J 6. SUMMARY This study was conducted on 30 dogs of different ages, sexes, breeds and weights. They were divided randomly into two equal groups called halotane and sevoflurane groups. Following premedication with a combination of thiazine hydrochlorid-xylazine (Rompun-Bayer) and atropine sulphate (Atropin- Vetaş) and induction with thiopental sodium (Pentothal sodium-Abbott) these cases were intubated and then were anestezied during two hours with halothane and sevoflurane, a very new anesthetic. Halothane and sevoflurane of the doses of 1.5 MAC were administered in a mixture of 100 % O2. During clinical examination, respiration rate, body temperature, reflexes during recovery and complete recovery time were monitored. Respiration rate, body temperature, systolic and diastolic pressures and heart beat rate were measured at 10 minute intervals during the anesthesia. During hematologic and biochemical examination, leukocyte and arythrocyte counts, amount of hemoglobin, values of hematokrit, BUN, creatine, glucose, ALT, AST, albumin and globulin were analyzed using the blood samples obtained prior to, during (at 60 minute) and 24 hours after anesthesia. In both groups, respiration rate started to decrease immediately after induction. The respiration rate reduced approximetaly 50 % during the anesthesia and this rate was recorded on average as 10/minute. In both groups, systolic and diastolic pressure and heart beat rate were found to reduce. The reduction in heart beat rate was more significant in halothane group than sevoflurane. The heart beats were more rhytmic and regular in sevoflurane group. The body temperature tended to lessen during the anesthesia in both groups. During recovery period, sevoflurane group regained reflex earlier than halothane group. The complete recovery period (standing-up) occurred short in sevoflurane group as compared with halothane group. Among hematologic parameters, leukocyte count continued to rise 24 hours after the anesthesia. Although leukocyte count increased in sevoflurane group, this increase was62 detected to be statistically non-significant. Even though erythrocyte count, hemoglobin and hematokrit values were observed to reduce slightly during anesthesia, they reached their pre-anesthetic values after 24 hours. In biochemical parameters, statistically significant variations in serum glucose and ALT levels of halothane group were detected. These parameters were measured as near as their normal values in the blood serum taken 24 hours after anesthesia. In sevoflurane group, statistically significant increase in serum glycose level during the anesthesia was determined to approach to its pre-anesthetic value in the samples taken 24 hours later. In other biochemical parameters, BUN, creatine, albumin and globulin values were seen to remain within their physiologic ranges in both groups. In conclusion, It was determined that sevoflurane imposed few adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and possessed short recovery period as compared with halothane. Therefore, It was suggested that sevoflurane should be preferred to halothane in cases which have cardiovascular disorders or require quick recovery from anesthesia.
