This study investigated the seroprevalence of Canine Herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1) infection in 332 dogs living under shelter conditions. Serological analyses of serum samples revealed CHV-1 antibodies in 88.9% of the dogs. The data demonstrated that CHV-1 seropositivity was particularly increased among bitches that had previously given birth and those whose neonates had high survival rates. The high seroprevalence observed in the shelter highlights the widespread presence of CHV-1 and the challenges of controlling transmission in such high-risk environments. Implementing regular serological screenings, isolating infected individuals, and adopting vaccination protocols are of great importance to control the infection, especially in communal settings like shelters. Broader studies are needed to better understand the epidemiological characteristics of CHV-1 and to develop effective preventive and control strategies.
