The effects of lidocaine and meloxicam administrations in ovariohysterectomy on postoperative glutathione peroxidase, catalase and malondialdehyde levels in dogs

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this thesis is lidocaine and meloxicam administrations effects on postoperative oxidative stress signs in healthy dogs performed ovariohysterectomy in routine. In this study, 28 bitches which were brought into Aydın Adnan Menderes University Veterinary Faculty Hospital for applying ovariohysterectomy were used. Dogs were divided into equal 4 groups [Control (K) group (n=7), Lidocaine (L) group (n=7), Meloxicam (M) group (n=7) and Lidocaine-meloxicam (LM) group (n=7)] randomly. Lidocaine group; Following the application of ovariohysterectomy, Lidocaine 1 mg/kg was sprayed into the cranial and caudal parts of the abdominal cavity and the incision region was closed. Meloxicam Group: Following the application of ovariohysterectomy, a single dose of 0,2 mg/kg meloxicam was administered subcutaneously. Lidocaine-meloxicam Group: Following the application of ovariohysterectomy, lidocaine 1 mg/kg was sprayed into the cranial and caudal parts of the abdominal cavity intraperitoneally and a single dose of meloxicam 0,2 mg/kg was administered subcutaneously and the incision region was closed. Control Group: Ovariohysterectomy operation was done in routine without applying lidocaine or meloxicam after an operation in the control group. Blood samples were taken in preoperative and 2nd,12th, 24th hours in postoperative periods in order to obtain oxidative stress levels. malondialdehyde serum (MDA), glutathione peroxidase serum (GSH-Px) and catalase serum (CAT) were measured from those samples. Not only the levels of MDA, GSH-Px and CAT in lidocaine-meloxicam group but also the level of CAT in lidocaine group decreased. As a result, it was concluded that lidocaine with meloxicam concentration could be a useful drug to reduce oxidative stress.
